What is eSIM and Dual SIM?

First developed in 2012, eSIMs are software-based, downloadable SIMs. They are now the standard SIM format in many modern smartphones. eSIMs negate the need to switch cards around when changing providers and allows users to download and store multiple mobile numbers or data plans straight to their device, rather than inserting a new card for each one. They also work alongside SIM cards, and modern smartphones often support both eSIM and traditional SIM cards.

Dual SIM is the term given to devices which support both a physical SIM card as well as an eSIM. This allows users the convenience of storing two or more network providers or phone numbers on the same device, switching between them when needed.

Here are just a few of the many ways that you can use Dual SIM:

- Add a local data plan when you're travelling to a different country or region

- Have separate plans for voice calls and data usage

- Have one number for business and another number for personal use
