Tips and tricks

Turn on data roaming

It’s important to switch on Data Roaming on your BetterRoaming eSIM if you want to use a plan when abroad. You can also turn off Data Roaming for your primary SIM to avoid paying roaming fees on it.

Please note: if you have Data Switching turned to ON while roaming in another country, you may incur international roaming charges on your primary SIM. This is because Data Switching means your phone will automatically alternate between the BetterRoaming eSIM and your primary SIM when connecting to mobile data, depending on coverage and availability. This mode is designed for people who need the strongest possible mobile connection, regardless of cost. If you would like to avoid roaming charges while abroad, we recommend turning Data Switching off.

Turn on Low Data Mode
You can switch your Data Mode from Standard to Low Data Mode for each of your mobile plans by going to Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data

Low Data Mode helps reduce mobile data usage by pausing automatic updates, photo syncing, and background tasks like location tracking.

Turn on Low Power Mode.

Low Power Mode temporarily reduces background activity like downloads. It also stops live location tracking on apps like Maps when you’re not using them (although location services will still work while you have the app open).

This can help reduce your overall battery consumption and limit data usage for functions not needed while you’re traveling.

You can turn on Low Battery Mode by going to Settings > Battery, or in the Control Center.

Download Maps to use offline

Apple Maps, Maps.me and Google Maps all allow you to download interactive maps of specific areas to your device. These saved maps will function as normal, even when offline. This is great for conserving data usage and is especially useful in areas with poor local network coverage.

Download podcasts, music, and videos.

Streaming podcasts, music, and videos while travelling can use a substantial amount of mobile data. We highly recommend downloading your favourite media over Wi-Fi before traveling to help reduce your data usage. Most paid streaming services, including Netflix, Spotify, Bandcamp and Apple Music, allow you to download content to your device. This can be particularly helpful in places with little to no network coverage, such as during a flight or at sea.

Download the local language with Google Translate.

If you’re traveling to an area where you don’t speak the language, translation software is a necessity. Did you know that you can also use Google Translate without an internet connection? Just like with Google Maps, you can download languages ahead of time from Google Translate and use them when you’re offline.

Location services in the Photos app

The Photos app can tag each photo you take with a location. This is great for creating memories that you can revisit later in the Photos app. Note that this will use some of your data, so if you’re looking to curb your data usage, we recommend keeping your phone in Low Power Mode, or switching to While Using the App in Settings > Photos.
